Why USA TODAY’s Editorial Board broke with tradition in presidential race

In the 34-year history of USA TODAY, the Editorial Board has never taken sides in the presidential race. Instead, we’ve expressed opinions about the major issues and haven’t presumed to tell our readers, who have a variety of priorities and values, which choice is best for them. Because every presidential race is different, we revisit our no-endorsement policy every four years. We’ve never seen reason to alter our approach. Until now.

This year, the choice isn’t between two capable major party nominees who happen to have significant ideological differences. This year, one of the candidates — Republican nominee Donald Trump — is, by unanimous consensus of the Editorial Board, unfit for the presidency.

  1. Wow, their hypocrisy knows no bounds. The corrupt Clinton machine has a stranglehold not only globally but it's so powerful domestically that even USA today had to bow down. They knew this was not a smart decision so they had to put out a video and carefully try to convince the public that they were not endorsing Clinton. It's so insulting to the American people. I am a registered Independent and the power that the Clintons hold has to be balanced and that is why I will vote for Trump!

  2. Drumphtards run deep here –
lol – Convinced their bots and multi-counts can rig more than YouTube..
They're in for a yuge Nov. surprise

  3. in other words vote for TRUMP! I hear the fear in your voices. don't worry, we know you are being bullied by the government…you'll thank us later. USA today, you'll be free after Trump is President.

  4. New today, Bill Clinton's claim that the Clinton Foundation has done so much good around the world especially in the fight against AIDS.  Clinton Foundation busted for distributing Aids medication to clinics and hospitals in Africa diluted 50% in an agreement with 3 drug companies and pocketing the profits.  IRS and Congress investigating.

  5. Trump's supporters will make up excuses but only FOOLS will refuse to read USA Today's fully documented report that has compelled them to bring their conclusions to the American people. Republicans in the media, in the Republican National Committee & those who spent their lives serving the interests of American conservatives & the GOP did all they could to inform voters during the primaries & b4 their convention that Trump was mentally & emotionally unfit to hold ANY public office, let alone be president. This election is NOT politics as usual because never before has a major US political party nominated an egotistical sociopath who doesn't even have a basic understanding of US constitutional separation of powers. Trump's repeated claims of "renegotiating" US loans & US treaties the way he has used defaults & bankruptcies in his business, proves he knows nothing about governing or the financial collapse that will result if the USA refused to honor its international agreements & our US dollar became worthless. Every financial institution in this country knows that Trump isn't even good at running his own businesses(good businesses aren't sued by thousands of their investors, shareholders, business partners & employees, and they don't have to file bankruptcy 6 times to stay afloat). So far Trump's erratic megalomania has only harmed those stupid enuf to do business with him. At least allow USA Today to layout the evidence on which they have based their decision. Regardless of the applause Trump gets for his vulgar, ugly rants I want to believe Americans still know the difference between right & wrong. Appealing to the worst in human nature, our fears, prejudices & inciting violence, is wrong.

  6. I would like to see the divergent positions on Hillary Clinton pro and con over your coverage period from now to November 8.

  7. Since you've advised me to vote for Hillary (not Trump) I'll be signing up to volunteer at his campaign office tomorrow -thank you

  8. Your editorial castigating Donald Trump as a political misanthrope has totally missed the point of the mood most of us living here today. Missed it so badly that there is probably little hope for you to ever see the reality before this whole house of cards crumbles in on itself.  Our economy is in shambles, unemployment is at record highs, the national debt is sinking us to crush depth, our borders are open sieves, our cities run amuck in chaos, our dedicated law enforcement officers are targeted and fear for their lives, the government's executive administration lies to us about nearly everything, We have a Justice Department from which we cannot obtain justice, and the legislative and judicial branches have given up trying to fulfill their obligations under the constitution. But you think Mr. Trump is a bad example of what's needed to lead America today?  Elitist's like you are so enamored with your own opinion that you have lost touch with the reality of our situation. What makes you think that selecting a solution to our problems by using the same old pabulum – a cookbook politician that will hold the course of your Titanic straight into the iceberg?  The time for a change is long past.

  9. Sounds like the Clinton DNC caught up with you on the list of liberal sources and scheduled you to pop up and blow
liberal crap. If USA had been neutral and disparage Clinton also you stil would be neutral , so you had a choice. Well I have
a choice "I PLEDGE TO NEVER BUY YOUR RAG AGAIN AND IF I FIND ONE PROMISE TO USE IT FOR PUPPY PADS"
One never burns a bridge, unless for a reason, Trump is about the Constitution, fairness, and single standards for all.
The editorial staff needs to go back to the liberal arts collage they came from and learn Americanism !

  10. USA Today shows how low of attack and how biased the company really is. How can USA Today ever be trusted as an undbiased news source? 61% Trump for the win

  11. I don't understand why people are choosing between these two shills when Jill Stein is offering what most people are looking for.

  12. If the right side of politics doesn't organize we will continue getting steam rolled by leftist organizations like USA Today. This will be the last USA Today video clip that I watch. So long, I'm sure you won't miss a deplorable like me.

  13. You three stooges are news reporters I thought ..You are not in a positiong to be telling us who to vote for,,,it is none of your business who I vote for but I will tell you anyways ..You three stupid nuts just made me want to VOTE TRUMP
