“(CNN) A former Bosnian Croat general has died after apparently swallowing poison as a judge at the Hague upheld his 20-year sentence for war crimes.

Footage from the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) showed 72-year-old Slobodan Praljak tilt his head back and drink from a small glass bottle as the presiding judge read out the verdict.

“Slobodan Praljak is not a war criminal. I am rejecting your verdict with contempt,” Praljak shouted before swallowing the liquid.

The judge was then heard immediately suspending proceedings and asking for the curtains to be drawn. An ambulance was at the building shortly and paramedics raced up to the courtroom, Reuters reported.

The courtroom was being treated as a crime scene, an ICTY spokesperson told CNN.
Croatia’s Prime Minister, Andrej Plenkovic, later confirmed the former general had died and offered his condolences.

“On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Croatia and on my own behalf, I want to express my deepest condolences to the family of General Slobodan Praljak,” Plenkovic said, according to a tweet from an official government account.

The nature of the substance ingested by Praljak was not immediately clear.

Praljak, a former assistant defense minister of Croatia and commander of the Croatian Defense Council, was appealing a jail term of 20 years in prison.”

  1. It's interesting that Cenk talks about the Armenian genocide. I forget…what was the name of the group who carried out that genocide?

  2. Interesting that people always bring up nagasaki and hiroshima rather than dresden and cologne when just as many people died in those cities. They were white though

  3. As Bosnian, I can only say you're right on point. And, yes, we should all have to accept that bad things did happen in name of our ethnicities. That said, Serbian side committed most of the atrocities, while Croatia was following suit. Bosnian army killed the least civilians (almost negligible percentage compared to other two sides), destroyed the least churches and was an exemplary in following the Law and Customs of War. There were crimes committed by Bosnian side as well, but the situation in which Bosnian army was, with two formidable armies trying to rip it apart, with arms embargo that affected only Bosnian side, constant terror of Bosniak cities, the retaliation wasn't nearly as large.

Bosnian Army consisted of numerous ethnic Croats and Serbs who supported Pro Bosnian cause. In the end, there was only one side that fought for independent and sovereign Bosnia and Herzegovina that would be a country for all its citizens regardless of their ethnicity.

The problem is the fact both Serbia and Croatia, as well as their ethnic groups within Bosnia are denying those convictions and glorying their war criminals, which is, IMO, a trait displayed by sociopaths. Propaganda is a huge issue, but the propaganda itself can't play an important role if general public is not ignorant and are thinking critically. All crimes should be equally condemned, but it should be CLEARLY stated who was the aggressor and who was defending its homeland.

  5. I agree with John except on one point, the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were actually the lesser of two evils. Had Operation Downfall actually taken place the death toll on all sides would have been much higher.
